8th Album “Untitled” by Downy

We associate post rock with euphoric highs, these fist-pumping, spirit-lifting moments that represent the most positive and sustained manifestation of catharsis. While these same emotions appear in 8th Album “Untitled” by Downy, they emerge cloaked in fast, mathy rhythms and topped with an indie rock sheen, a combination that sparks engaging songwriting and impactful arrangements. Immediately, the intricate drum work pops to the forefront, taking influence from jazz and prog to form a musical skeleton. Soft vocals pulled from 2000s art rock give the tracks an aesthetic rudder, but most of the emotional heavy lifting comes from the impressively varied yet always enormous guitar sounds. These guitars enable that coveted soaring feeling, with warm chords and frantic, noisy delivery that flesh out the sound into something majestic, even otherworldly. More covert and understated than much of that golden age post rock, Downy’s songs may even provide something more ecstatic, like a firework contained in a snow globe, dazzling in its precarity and its perfection.
