AFTER PARTY by TEMPS
If you didn’t catch the release of PARTY GATOR PURGATORY in May, you may have missed out on one of the best experimental hip hop records of the year. Thankfully, the avant garde collective TEMPS is back with their follow up release AFTER PARTY. Featuring the combined talents of over 25 international musicians, and with British comedian James Acaster at the creative helm, this short EP leans even harder into the genre-defying bravado that made their first record so groundbreaking. Combining elements of glitchy electronica, groovy jazz, glistening psychedelia, and gritty underground rap, these disparate sounds come together across 5 tracks to create a cohesive EP that is somehow approachable, even for those who aren’t typically fans of experimental music. The final track “belongbetween” is particularly impressive, a massive posse cut that’s over 8 minutes long featuring Quelle Chris, Wheelchair Sports Camp, Mal Devisa, and many, many more. Showing just as much effort and attention to detail as TEMPS’ first release, AFTER PARTY is clearly more than a mere afterthought to the group’s debut album and deserves its time in the spotlight. - Kalen
