Ambivert by Blemishes
Ambient music transports us to a distinct and memorable space, casting broad strokes and filling in minute details to create a meditative environment that feels alive. However, what should we expect out of ambient soundscapes when they reflect the overwhelming instability of early adulthood? The new record Ambivert by Blemishes takes a maximalist approach to ambient sound design, assembling an explosive mosaic of oversaturated, uncomfortable sounds interspersed with a handful of concise noise rock songs. At each transition point, a musical swell forces our eyes in ten directions at once, nervously watching each instrument and sound to see which one will win out and carry us to our next destination. Mimicking closely the feeling of uncontrolled pandemonium that precedes all of life’s most important decisions, these moments on the album remind us that this uncertainty always gives way to a new direction. However disjunct this new trajectory feels from the last, we can always make a new home in our future, trusting that the roaring noises of a hectic life will one day align into a beautiful soundscape once again.
