because our days are numbered… by Treehouse of Horror

With the wealth of music we have dissecting the endless intricacies of romance, platonic friendship fails to permeate the cultural zeitgeist in the same way, compounding the stigma around friendship’s triviality and childishness. Canadian screamo outfit Treehouse of Horror strikes back at this blind spot on their new EP because our days are numbered…, delivering strikingly lucid, realistic, and beautiful portraits of a quarter life crisis anchored on fading childhood friendships. Guitar twinkles more closely associated with later forms of emo color in the spaces in between emotional climaxes, building into moments of aggressive, distorted jazz chords and strained, screaming vocals. Before this dramatic backdrop appears refreshingly approachable and transparent lyrics, telling touching stories of childhood friendship, admitting that, even after all of the romances, careers, families, and other memories to come, these moments spent with friends will remain as a deep personal comfort until the very end. Taking seriously for the first time the limitation of their lifespan, the speaker uses these memories of pure enjoyment as a guide to eliminating the people and pursuits in their present day that take them further from this point and waste their precious time.
