Describing the Thing by Shane Aspegren

Describing the Thing by Shane Aspegren

Moving houses can be a daunting task, but an international move is a major life transition that demands a massive amount of energy. Created during the artist’s move across the globe, Describing the Thing by Shane Aspergen is an atmospheric ambient project that aims to decipher the indescribable with a focus on communication that transcends the sometimes limiting bounds of spoken word. The only section of the project that uses language describes the magic of the cochlea bone and its indispensable role in carrying sound to the brain, further driving home the idea that the interpretation of sound can be more important than the sound itself. Blooming forth from silence, Aspergen wastes no time incorporating elements like rodential scritching and bright twinkling, sounds building and syncopating over an ever-steady beat until a fully formed meditative experience reveals itself. With a brief runtime of 20 minutes, Describing the Thing transforms pleasant synthesized sounds, remaining introspective and understandable at the same time. -Carrie
