II by Dorminn
What happens when you combine an incredible collection of worldwide folk instruments, a cabin in the woods, and a love for black metal? Dorminn’s second LP discovers some incredible new means of handling the emotions of black metal. Combining instruments and sounds from disparate cultures that otherwise wouldn’t have exchanged much, Dorminn creates something here that sounds foreign to everyone. At the same time, however, his excruciatingly intense vocal performance comes straight from the European black metal tradition, and in most cases on this record you could easily envision where the tremolo, distorted guitars would fit into the sound. Where black metal points its angst at one specific culture and its shortcomings, Dorminn shoots indiscriminately at all societies, circumventing all of them to create a rare piece of truly human art.
