It’s been a while since I’ve found a record as glitchy as eimi by vai5000, an atmospheric hyperpop vocaloid album with a serious flair for the dramatic. The few moments of uninterrupted peace on this album draw us in with their angelic tone and rich atmosphere, but just as we settle in the entire track bubbles over with the nervous energy of glitchy digital noise. Going as far as to use these noises as elements of rhythm and harmony, vai5000 alternates between treating glitch electronics as a support and as an antagonist, painting a picture of a heterogeneous mixture that constantly tries and fails to fully combine. That being said, nothing on eimi feels out of place; the opposition between these two aesthetics becomes its own aesthetic, bringing a vital sense of progression to the album. Together, entropy and order make up a complete system, giving us reason to celebrate all the darkness and light within, to take the un-unified whole as an expertly designed work of art.
