Everett by Body/Negative
For those of us who eventually enter hospice care, those last few days are some of the strangest of our entire lives. For once, we have no goal other than comfort. We’re left with no aspiration to a future that includes ourselves, turning our full attention to the ways we may continue on spiritually and in those we leave behind. Capturing these unexpectedly peaceful days from the outside, Everett by experimental ambient artist Body/Negative throws vocals deep into the background as we’re invited to meditate on a series of warm, distorted soundscapes. The artist sits with their father on the last days of his life, the two looking out into the world and their pasts together with new eyes as time screeches to a halt. Every once in a while, the muddied waters crystalize into distinct thoughts, coalescing around minimal drum patterns, uncharacteristically clear guitar leads, and introspective vocal loops. For these precious, hopeless moments, grief has one foot in the door, patiently awaiting its opportunity to consume the world as sunlight hits the room for the last time.
