Faune by Faune
Experiencing the death of someone close to you can lead to huge shifts in perspective as you realize the true nature of loss as something incredibly complicated. While the world you knew transforms before your eyes, you begin to understand life as endlessly frustrating and beautiful, shifting through periods of immense grief and cathartic splendor as the days go on. Inspired by the philosophical concept of samsara, faune tells stories of reincarnation in their self-titled album, exploring different expressions of life and death in humanity and beyond, ultimately ruled by karma and the destruction it may bring. This introverted slowcore project is quiet though deeply textured, layering spacey ambient electronica with bedroom indie/folk and deep symphonic elements to round out the arrangement. A dynamic and cyclical energy propels faune forward, when among steady beats and despondent murmurs a synth echoing the beeping of a heart rate monitor comes into focus and eventually flatlines. Anxiety transforms into release, the soundscape washed away in a rush of twinkling beauty before a brand new beat and structure take over. Faune takes their time to get comfortable, flowing through different states of being and revealing more beauty and nuance as it unfolds. Otherworldly deconstructed club pulls us into industrial dance territory before melting into psychedelia and the sounds of nature. Discordant folk evokes a sense of dissatisfaction, uncomfortable with the ever-repeating nature of samsara. Ending with a particularly evocative story reflecting the sometimes unexpected events life puts us through, we return suddenly back to the present moment. Left to continue our own life cycle, perhaps faune provides an opportunity for us to reset our own rhythm and structure.
