Hometown Girl by u.e.

hometown girl album cover

The smoke that once hung in the air of lounges and clubs turns to dust, dance floors empty as the last generations that remember their warm, lively gatherings pass on. Hometown Girl by U.e. presents music for these abandoned spaces, inspired by the communities that once thrived there while remaining self-consciously awkward given our postmodern inexperience. Haunted tape loops, lo-fi intimate balladry, and disembodied swing jazz show us just how far we’ve come from the unironic, unashamed expression of old. However, what we find here refuses to wallow in these differences, presenting the abandoned space as still warm, cozy, and intimate today through the album’s whispered vocals, narrow arrangements, and breathy tone. Without the crowds, without the smoke, without the lights, we’re left with only ourselves and an artist gracefully navigating this holy ground, experiencing an emotional communion through heartfelt songwriting that transcends time, setting, and distance.
