Review of I Love It Here, I Live Here by Luge

I Love It Here, I Live Here by Luge

We’re often trained to hear “art” in the genre descriptor and think of the music as overly self-serious, but Canadian art punk band Luge violates expectations in the most refreshing possible way. Time signatures bend to the will of lyrics soaked heavily in abstraction, dripping out meaning in disparate and confusing directions. In general, I Love It Here, I Live Here explores the contrasts between the safe, stable life of middle class homeownership and the increasingly common lifestyle of unrooted young people. Luge finds the positives in this younger way of living, using their impressively tight instrumentals to create these jumpy songs that seem very well-tuned to the current attention span situation in broader society. At no point does Luge feel lost in their own experimentation, since they keep motifs brief and the rhythms focused. For those questioning the point of making art in this oversaturated, hectic world, Luge brings one inspiring message: art is fun.
