God Made Me An Animal by Better Lovers

2023 is shaping up to be the year of the Supergroup, with members of Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die, and Fit for an Autopsy banning together as hardcore/metalcore group Better Lovers. They just put out their first EP called God Made Me An Animal, a dark, chaotic 15min rollercoaster featuring four tracks that are all fast and discordant with an undeniable combo of instrumental chops and strong songwriting. The shouting vocals laid over fast, dissonant riffs makes for great pacing. However, a few of these track have a melodic bridge wedged in and it's a little disorienting, even corny given the hungry, intense nature of the album. However, I do commend that the songs on this EP don't all sound exactly the same. The variety adds value here, even if it's not my favorite creative choice. My favorite track on this EP was definitely the title track “God Made Me An Animal,” which you are listening to right now. Overall, I give Better Lovers a 7/10 this week.

Eye for an Eye… ‘Til the World’s Blind by Butcher Babies

I might be biased, but I always get particularly excited for new music from female-fronted metal bands. Especially if that band is Butcher Babies. Especially when they release a double-album. On the dual-release Eye For An Eye...'Til The World's Blind, Butcher Babies plays with a lot of genres within heavy music, from Power Metal to Metalcore and even a little Nu Metal. The first half, "Eye for An Eye" really leans towards a crisper, radio-friendly pop metal sound, but Butcher Babies aren't afraid to unleash the brutality on the "'Til The World's Blind" with more gutteral growling and aggressive riffs. This ambitious double-record also includes a Death Metal flavored cover of Doja Cat's "Best Friend", which is something I never knew I needed. With a little something for everybody, this might not be the most cohesive release, but Butcher Babies make up for it with more than a few bangers. 7/10.
