it’s all liminal space - m a l i b l u e : (

The concept of liminal spaces has inspired many, many artists, to the extent that it’s a challenge to make something that says something new about these ideas. But when we look at the existing body of work that evokes liminality, whether it’s from the traditional art world like Rothko’s massive abstract paintings or from general internet phenomena like the Backrooms, these spaces are often portrayed as not just a placeless-place, but often as sinister and oppressive. That’s why I was so captivated by the new album it’s all liminal space by atmospheric artist m a l i b l u e : (. Instead of the ominous droning and eerie noises that I would expect from “liminal space” inspired music, this delicate release explores its central theme through shimmering feather-light production. Gossamer synths and hazy samples set an ephemeral tone, as hypnotic looping tracks paired with washed-out vocals create a sense of disorientation that only immerses the listener deeper into this world. This release tends towards shorter bite-sized tracks, offering only a fleeting glimpse of each vignette before dissolving into a new sound. With these elements, when it’s all liminal space is played, it transforms any space into somewhere both nostalgic yet unfamiliar, highlighting the transient nature of all things in the big picture.
