Lets B Havin U by Eva808
Much has been written about the escapism of the club; how, in times of economic instability or political upheaval, some seek stability in the celebration of ecstatic dance in rooms full of sweaty strangers. But during these deafeningly loud DJ sets surrounded by people too fucked up to speak, these spaces aren’t always about community building or creating thoughtful relationships that actually soothe the feelings of uncertainty and alienation that permeate the broader culture. And on her EP “Let’s B Havin U?” EP, experimental producer EVA808 captures that feeling of disconnection present in the nightlife. Through the ice-cold, highly textured production, meaning is found in the isolation, but these deconstructed club tracks are rooted in old school sensibilities. By pulling samples from old vinyl and using vintage 80s synths, re-sampled and paired with intimate recordings like teeth chattering and smacking gum, the party is made personal. On-the-nose critiques of club culture descend into anesthetic disassociation as the beats speed up and shatter, a broken mirror reflecting the ways we hold ourselves back from connection.
