Mayday by Myriam Gendron

Mayday by Myriam Gendron

As we stand knee-deep in the mire of grief, each step, each hour, each day, each week feels like a carbon copy of the last, bringing us nothing but new reasons to feel our pain. After losing her mother, Quebec avant-folk artist Myriam Gendron started work on Mayday, a collection of songs that eloquently retell the story of her long, cyclical recovery process. Beginning with dark, flowing folk grooves, these tracks introduce more light with each repetition of their progressions, using avant-garde harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic techniques to slowly reveal the hope imprisoned behind the darkness. The songs slowly lift us out of ourselves as they develop, with this glacial emotional progress carving out a path to escape our regret, loneliness, and alienation. Finally, a future comes into view, giving us a point to strive towards that may have been unthinkable before our loss, swelling our hearts with hope as the band slides down just a little less on their next grieving turn.
