Metal Roundup 10/13
Metal roundups always bring the heat, but this week’s seems even more heavy than usual. Friday the 13th really brought the darkness out in the metal scene!
Exalt and Despair by Selenoplexia
First up, we’ve got a band that’s got a finger on the extreme metal pulse right now. Exalt and Despair by Selenoplexia provides a fantastic example of the blackened death sound that’s lighting up the scene right now, with long, chaotic song structures, frenzied rhythms, and dark riffs.
Это начнется заново // ТВОЙРУТ by Аферист
Next up is Это начнется заново // ТВОЙРУТ by Аферист, a record that walks the line between hardcore punk and black metal. This record thrashes wildly between elements of the two genres, executing each with flawless precision.
Ruiner by Krieg
Moving on, Ruiner by Krieg plays crusty, noisy, blackened metal that takes cues from the looping slow builds of post rock. This record doesn’t stray far enough from metal sounds to fall under post metal, but its memorable and impactful songwriting approach elevates it above the extreme metal pack.
The Gathering of Souls by Malformed
Finally, we got a straight up death metal record that made the list just by going ridiculously hard. The Gathering of Souls by Malformed gives us seventeen minutes of nonstop violence, with compositions so raw and heavy that recording equipment can hardly pick up the details of the performance.
