Metal Roundup Week of 10/20
At Outside Noise, we listen to all of the underground metal that comes out every week and pick our favorite records. This metal roundup has a little something for everybody, from technical death metal to blackened speed metal to crossover thrash, so let’s jump right in!
Symbols of Seven Harmonies by Versteck
Versteck proves that the Indonesian Black Metal scene is worthy of international acclaim on their new record Symbols of Seven Harmonies. Featuring a raw, punk-adjacent sound, Symbols of Seven Harmonies is refreshingly free from pretension, and stands out with its back-to-the-basics approach that pierces straight to the heart of black metal.
In but Not Of by Afterbirth
Rooted in technical death metal, Afterbirth’s bloodsplattered release In But Not Of takes no prisoners. But making use of more experimental techniques than just brutal breakdowns and impressive riffs, Afterbirth surprises listeners with a few twists and turns that make In But Not Of an especially fun listen.
Beneath the Crimson Prophecy by Diabolic Night
I’m not usually a fan of speed metal, Diabolic Night made me a convert on their new album Beneath the Crimson Prophecy. Heavily influenced by black metal, this release delivers the best of both genres with impressive precision.
Unhealthy Mechanisms by Go Ahead and Die
Finally, on their new record Unhealthy Mechanisms, crossover outfit Go Ahead and Die show us that thrash isn’t dead, it’s just passed out in the gutter and covered in a crusty slurry. Blurring the boundaries between death metal, trash metal, hardcore, and crust punk, Go Ahead and Die leans hard into unbridled chaos, making this release one of our favorites of the week.
