No More Apocalypse Father by We Are Winter’s Blue and Radiant Children

Like gazing out onto an icy street from inside a warm home, we find ourselves constantly exposed to worldwide disasters, empathizing with people for whose suffering we have no personal experience even remotely as significant. No More Apocalypse Father by We Are Winter’s Blue and Radiant Children, a Montreal supergroup sharing a member with Godspeed You! Black Emperor, takes a noisy ambient approach to this sensation of empty empathy. Meanwhile, the band mutters some of our frivolous daily concerns in the background, painting us as almost satanic in our mindless action as every ounce of our consumption causes catastrophe abroad. An oversaturated sound highlights the hyperreal and alienated world we inhabit in countries like the US and Canada, interacting with the final products of labor every day that we could never conceive of assembling ourselves. As the synths and rock instrumentation slam into this distortive wall, their broad, dramatic, orchestral emotional swells feel as heartfelt as they are impotent, as the paralysis of neoliberal atomization and insignificance sets in.
