Oh Mijn Ziel by Broeder Dieleman

Dutch artist Broeder Deileman has released his captivating new project Oh Mijn Ziel, a contemporary folk album reminiscent of 19th century German art songs that blend Romantic style poetry and expressive music as a powerful form of storytelling. The album paints the picture of a somber yet beautiful world, highlighting the complexities of nature and its intertwining with human emotions. The combination of gloomy slowcore, delicate lullabies, and grizzled spoken word add depth to the narrative and counter the solemnity with a sliver of hope.

Instrumentally the release heavily features acoustic guitar, trumpet, piano, and accordion to accompany the poetic lyrics. Soprano backing vocals soar distantly overhead, acting as a perfect foil to the grizzled, emotive lead vocals. Bird calls and other field recordings enrich the sonic landscape while connecting the listener to the song’s subject matter. The distinctive choice not to scrub out sounds like the vocalist’s breaths or tactile noises of the instruments would normally be annoying, but this rawness instead enhances the album’s atmospheric and collaborative feel allowing the music to become a shared experience. This journey gradually leads to a transformative instrumental piece that ushers in a sense of rebirth and calmness, breaking away from the earlier melancholic tones as the project reaches its end. The conclusion resonates with emotions that are evocative and almost spiritual, showcasing the deep connection between humanity and the natural world.

Fans of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea will likely enjoy Oh Mijn Ziel in that it offers a conceptual and storytelling approach, albeit with a more rooted folk sound instead of leaning into experimental and electronic elements. As an ode to the beauty and complexity of nature, this release is highly recommended listening for a trudge through dense woods on a gloomy autumn day.
