On the Run by Oldstar
If you’re a fan of the emotional honesty that comes with lo-fi bedroom music, then you won’t want to miss out on this next one. Oldstar, a self-described country rock artist from Florida, wears their heart on their sleeve in their new release On the Run, a charming collection of tunes that embrace styles ranging from folk to midwest emo to tell the artist’s story. In struggling to deal with the ending of a particularly impactful phase of their life, Oldstar gives us this record that gives us their thoughts point-blank. Self-deprecating and vain, On the Run shows us Oldstar’s emotional pain without verging on the dramatic. Likewise, some Duster-esque production and riffs blanket the project in melancholy, expanding upon this muted negativity that permeates everything on On the Run. Simple as these tactics are, nothing conveys the disappointment with oneself that comes along with a breakup like some lo-fi country with heavy influence from indie rock.
