Spontaneous Human Combustion by Hot Organs
The gushing monsoon of post-human capitalism floods our biology with the tools of our demise, fulfilling our every dream as the world turns into a surreal nightmare. Spontaneous Human Combustion by Hot Organs takes a magnifying glass to this surreal horror, approaching gothic proto punk with lo-fi production and half-spoken vocals to deliver biting social critiques. Though a unified conceptual hand clearly molds the album’s commentary, each track dives into one of a diverse array of everyday occurrences with a separate, nuanced approach. From fiery power pop to restore our body positivity to psychedelic ragers to poke fun at manufactured sexual ideals, we laugh, cry, and cheer alongside this impressively charismatic band. More importantly, however, the combination of grotesque lyricism and deadpan delivery speak directly to the least critical parts of our mind, waking them up to the constant onslaught of empty marketing leveled against them. If capitalism sets us free, it does so completely by accident, and we must remember not to trust it to continue to do so indefinitely.
