To the Equivalence by Void Eon
Depression has a tendency to force us into a rut. Our field of vision for the future narrows down to nothing, leading us into dark places that we can’t imagine one day getting out of. In a grand testament to this particularly grim part of life, Australian outsider pop artist Void Eon made To the Equivalence, a fifty track album that oozes personality and individuality. Charming lyrics and vocals deliver the speaker’s feelings at point-blank range, often repeating a very direct refrain until we too feel stuck in a vicious cycle. Musically, each of these compositions feature stringy synth, piano, and organ leads that trip and fall out of their keys, outlining melodies that walk the line between dissonance and coziness. We find comfort in stagnation, but in the end we join in Void Eon’s desperate chants, begging ourselves and our worlds for change, for anything to rekindle our flame.
