Total Reality by Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice

When one stops to really appreciate the magnitude of destruction and devastation wrought by the Capitalist ruling class, it’s almost impossible to avoid feelings of complete powerlessness under oligarchs’ boot. But coming to terms with this power imbalance doesn’t only have to be expressed through righteous anger or defeated despair. Like Camus said, “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” Taking this philosophy by the reins, the new record Total Reality by Aussie electropunks Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice doesn’t so much wallow in the quagmire of late-stage capitalism, as it catches the waves and surfs into a current of fun-loving absurdist nihilism.

With a post-punk attitude accompanied by a barrage of retro synth riffs and funky bass lines, Total Reality wears its new wave influence on its sleeve. This sound is the perfect accompaniment to monotone vocals shouting out quirky lyrics steeped in snark and disillusionment. Even though Total Reality at its core is inherently pessimistic about the current state of events, groovy high-energy rhythms offer a fun escape from a world that is burning and drowning at the same time. And much like Philip K. Dick’s psychedelic sci-fi from which the band derives their name, instead of facing these issues with self-righteous seriousness, Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice demonstrates that laughter is the best medicine as they poke fun at the power-hungry.
