Турукка киирии (Acoustic) by Kuturar
Until now, Kuturar has been a Siberian band making some absolutely brutal sludge metal that oscillates in pace between hardcore punk speed and a doom metal crawl. However, their new record Турукка киирии (Acoustic) peels back the metal furnishings on this band’s songwriting, revealing that the underlying forces moving their music actually derive directly from the traditions of their unique Siberian Turkic culture. This stunning reveal presents us with an assembly of traditional instruments, along with some guitars and woodwinds, that take their cues from chant-like vocals in the Sakha language. Taking this knowledge and revisiting Kuturar’s more typical metal fare invigorates this already exciting sound, helping us identify the moments in their music that follow in these ancient traditions. Calling this an EP of acoustic covers really undersells what we’re getting here; Kuturar completely re-interprets their art from the ground up, creating innovative fusion tracks that easily stand on their own two legs.
