Wish You Were Here… by They Hate Change
It’s been a while since we talked about hip hop on here, so let’s change that. Florida rap duo They Hate Change just released their new EP Wish You Were Here… a collection of energetic, danceable hip hop tracks with excellent theming to tie it all together. Hyperactive bass frequencies dance around the track, encouraging the sense of urgency that’s ignited by frantic percussion and rapid, tight vocal rhythms. This record further establishes its identity by repeatedly returning to an answering machine motif, which despite sounding very strange works effortlessly with the rest of the album’s sound. Loved ones, telemarketers, pharmacies, barbers, and other characters all seem frustrated at the artists’ tendencies not to pick up the phone, an irritation that further plays into this album’s rapid pace. From IDM to EDM to straight-up rap verses, They Hate Change explores a wide variety of channels through which to direct their energy, a variety which comes home to roost within a solidly unified aesthetic that makes this album both unforgettable and endlessly replayable.
