The eerie lo-fi sounds of AUTHOR by herratic construct an environment excessively hostile to the individual, pushing against the explosive anger of the featured rappers to create sounds of deep unease and discomfort. Throwing vintage jazz samples, crisp noise motifs, and understated percussion against a chaotic background piled high with layers of latent sound, these backing tracks present an intimidating labyrinth for these vocalists to navigate, leaving their passionate vocal delivery stranded in an enormous, uncooperative sea. Placing these bars in such atypical environments gives these vocals the aesthetic of found footage, assigning us the role of an unintended audience of a scene removed impossibly far from its original context. Our response, one of disconnected befuddlement and unempathetic curiosity, perfectly encapsulates the reaction we find when voicing any systemic critique, no matter how real, desperate, or immediate. Our passionate articulations evaporate into a scorching desert, producing a brief spectacle, perhaps even causing concern or garnering attention, but never permanently shaping the churning sand of noise.
