Exodus by Nexcyia

The American dream functions like a kaleidoscope, simultaneously revealing a million realities each with wild variations in social mobility. As more of these shards darken to the glum hues of downward mobility, the decaying landscapes of Exodus by Nexcyia feel imminent. This ambient record tells the story of a family journeying from Texas to California in the 1970s, simultaneously experiencing and witnessing the effects of the first major postwar period of deindustrialization and stagflation. Bright synth leads of consumer capitalism struggle under the weight of cavernous, breathy noise, pulsating gently with the inevitable deepening of a complex crisis that continues to this day. In rare moments of relief, these sounds align in the perfect configuration to allow in rays of hope from above, stoking misplaced faith in a collapsing middle class. However, even after decades of the economic amphetamine of neoliberalism and the budgetary bonanza of the 21st century, we find Nexcyia’s stagnant lens fits better into our field of view now more than ever, reinvigorating our eternal malaise.
