Field Theory by MELTS
The concept of philosophical Monism and revelations of “It’s all connected, man” have been thoroughly mined for creative material by generations of countercultural artists; however, Irish psych-rockers MELTS explore these ideas from a new mind-expanding perspective on their sophomore record Field Theory. Taking a page from the realm of Quantum physics, Field Theory imagines complex interpersonal relationships as a web of subatomic particles in constant shift, each individual action causing a ripple effect that is experienced by the whole. Musically this sort of social Indra’s Net is expressed through intricately layered tracks, featuring high energy synth lines, fuzzy guitars, and hypnotic vocals, each piece in the arrangement playing off each other in complex shimmering harmony. With a sound heavily pulling from New Wave and krautrock, this release is better suited for the dancefloor than deep inner voyages. Yet true to their psychedelic roots, MELTS has their moments of introspective spacey meandering, but they always come down back to Earth.
