Lacrimae or Eleven Tears by Aune Mire
Ancient, familiar sounds turn sinister in an alien environment, returning to earth under the cloak of night and retaking their positions as wild animals in the bramble. As a group of noise musicians turned their attention to traditional folk music, the new album Lacrimae or Eleven Tears by Aune Mire emerged, combining a meticulous understanding of atmosphere with some of the oldest melodies that history can remember. Nowadays, when we imagine traditional folk music, we envision it occurring in a sterile studio environment, blocking out all coincidental sound and space to leave only the performers and their instruments. However, Aune Mire daringly reintroduces the atmosphere of the middle ages, placing their musicians outdoors amidst animal sounds, deep in the safety of caves and castles, and among the streets where conversation and noise trickle in from every crevice. Faced with an artful reconstruction of these spaces, these songs gain a degree of dark realism, reflecting the overflowing will of man to exert control and establish order over nature, a frightening force represented here by an incessant, unsettling drone.
