Onna-Bougeisha by Paurro

If you’re looking for something to dance to this week, let me recommend the new material from Mexico City DJ Paurro. Her new EP Onna-Bugeisha unearths the forgotten lives of ancient female warriors, channeling this fierce feminine energy into the current climate of gender-based violence in Mexico. Organic percussion joins forces with nature samples to create a uniquely earthy sound, turning the dance club into an outdoor adventure. Later in the record, sharp synths set the stage for a hollywood fight scene, in which our female protagonist triumphs against the outside threats to her safety. Despite the storytelling apparent all across this record, Onna-Bugeisha still works as a party playlist, as all of the same feelings of empowerment laced into the sound also do well in a dance floor environment. For those worried about choosing between deep themes and fun music, let Paurro show you the path where you get both without sacrificing anything.
