Possibles by Possibles
As the independent rock world turns in a darker, heavier, more dissonant direction, Quebec band Possibles introduces themselves on their self-titled debut as a group unafraid of a lighter, leaner sound. Electronic auxiliary percussion invites comparisons to trip hop, while smooth, arpeggiated guitars fill the sonic core with a flavor of melancholy reminiscent of In Rainbows. Deep, crooning vocals fill in the remaining space, singing in a prose form that ignores traditional structures, telling a miserable, meandering story of a distant, hot-and-cold romance that swallows the speaker whole. Like many of the melodies and song structures on the record, the lyrical themes end right where they start, with a scene of intense passion that will undoubtedly ignite another period of emotional turmoil. All signs point to the indefinite continuation of this cycle, reducing an entire life to mere endless, unrealized anticipation.
