Purity by Morgan Garrett

Purity by Morgan Garrett

Ideally, we live a life where our safety falls into the back of our minds, only occasionally surfacing as a concern. However, for experimental rock artist Morgan Garrett, finding their neighbor’s dead body spurred an existential meltdown that resulted in Purity, an album built on pure paranoia. Thoughts explode into shrapnel, each stanza appearing as a distinct obsession with its own melodic motif before quickly falling off track as the speaker locates a new source of anxiety. Nu metal vocals fold into meek folk whispers, and detuned acoustic strumming gives way to violent power chords, all embodying the instability that obliterated the artist’s life after this traumatic event. With the shield of perceived safety thoroughly pierced, supposedly familiar places and people suddenly raise suspicion. Desperately, the afflicted reveals these dangers to anyone who will listen in short bursts of hurried speech, releasing a blood-curdling cry for help that rips away our sense of safety.
