There Are Collectivities That Devour Souls by Excrucis
Just as people across history gaze up at the stars or the clouds in wonder, people in today’s bafflingly complex and robotically amoral neoliberal system always arrive at a similar, singular question: why? Continuing to chip away at the boundary between skramz and political punk, Excrusis brings a welcome dose of sasscore to the genre on their new record There Are Collectivities That Devour Souls. Every ounce of this album, sonically, lyrically, and compositionally, outright refuses complacency, confronting and assimilating capitalist guilt into a worldview that radically rejects all forms of injustice. Razor-sharp guitar leads trace the menacing silhouettes of unresolved chords, bolstered by dynamic drums and engaging bass lines that propel the band to feverishly energetic heights. However, the absolutely radiant frontperson unquestionably holds the emotional and musical reins throughout the record, employing sasscore inflections that dive in and out of moments of throat-destroying skramz screaming. By the conduit of their voice, we offer up our own frustrations with the world, metabolizing our guilt into pure rage directed at those who wring out every drop of human decency from the system.
