Wild Guess by Robber Robber

A quick look at the news over the past couple of weeks suggests a generational shift in the world and our future, yet generally our day-to-day wellbeing remains on the same gradual decline as before. This juxtaposition of everything happening while nothing changes rings out brilliantly on the new album Wild Guess by Robber Robber, a masterclass in challenging, heavy-hitting indie rock that maintains accessibility. Post punk sensibilities influence uniform, pounding beats along with extremely vibrant bass tones, all of which teases out the tensest components of each guitar chord and riff. A distant, angelic voice fights tooth and nail against this instrumental tension, on rare occasions winning out and guiding the band towards an exit from their uncomfortably tight, cyclical riffing. However, a force from beyond even the band’s control immediately shoves us back into this constricting chamber, shattering the illusion of movement and reminding us of the underlying, unchanging material conditions that always win out over those brief bursts of manufactured excitement.
