Time Lost / Time Regained by Shaene
If you like your emo songwriting with a touch of washed out noise, you’re in luck this week. England-based Shaene’s new record Time Lost / Time Regained circumvents the convention of placing unprocessed vocals at the immediate forefront, choosing to instead go the “vocals as instrument” route. If anything, the vocals here sound like a cross between Eliott Smith and Beach House, allowing the lyrics to sink behind a veil of wailing guitars and thrashing drums. Examining this as a rock record also unlocks some choice rhythmic motifs and riffing, proving that Shaene’s vision extends beyond just one segment of songwriting. With its ebbs and flows, Time Lost / Time Regained follows the emotional contours of a cathartic crying session, always applying pressure but expressing extreme upwellings at a few intuitively well-timed moments.
